That'll learn her!

From the Sacramento Bee - July 16, 2007

SACRAMENTO -- A 27-year-old Sacramento man died early Sunday after jumping out of a moving car during an argument with his girlfriend, officials said.

Sacramento Police Lt. Michael Bray said police were dispatched to Norwood and Morey avenues in the Del Paso Heights area for a call about a body in the road at 12:43 a.m.

Coroner's officials identified the dead man as Somchay Phomthevy. Officers determined that he leaped from the car during a heated quarrel and died when he hit the road. Bray said it is not clear whether the man knew that he was endangering his life when he jumped from the moving car.

Bray said the woman's identity was not available Sunday, but she was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The death did not appear to be suspicious, and more likely was accidental, Bray said. Coroner's officials had not determined the exact cause of death Sunday.

I was hoping for something more along the lines of......: Bray said that, "after spending a few moments with the women he could clearly see why the man would jump from the vehicle."

All we ever see on TV and in the movies, in fact all we have EVER seen, is people jumping from moving cars, trucks and trains and getting up with a minimum of scrapes. I'll admit that you'd have to be really desperate to want to try it, but we've been told since we were small that it's an extreme thing to do, it's dramatic, but it is not life-threatening.
You'd also probably have to be very drunk, on drugs and/or not very smart, but most of us have been one or the other more times than we care to admit.
Scary. And sad. Please let us know if you learn more about this. "Why," for example, is a question I'd like to get a better answer to.

I wonder...
...if this had happened in Brazil or Italy or Thailand, would we be as shocked? Would we be quicker to make jokes about it?
I might.
And, right now, I realize that I'm not proud of that admission.
With that in mind, maybe I won't.
Lessons come from all directions.
