A thinking man's post...

It is pretty common knowledge among those who know me that my religious beliefs aren't the same as when I grew up. I found someone who manages to mirror my beliefs in a very articulate fashion. Listen to this NPR interview with Julia Sweeney (actress of SNL "Pat" fame). Her take is very insightful and humorous.

I might consider laying out my beliefs in my own words someday, but this is a good start.

julia's blog is insightful, thought-provoking, and sometimes funny. don't know if you saw it yet, but she recently posted a list of the 17 books she read that helped her define her beliefs over time. books from richard dawkins, carl sagan, darwin, (several of them are books i've been wanting to read but never got around to)... and #2 on her list is from a woman i first heard interviewed on npr - karen armstrong - she's a fascinating woman, i said on my blog that listening to her voice is intoxicating, mesmerizing...if you'd like to hear a not-too-long but fascinating interview, it's here: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4541458

this interview was not about the book that julia sweeney mentions, "the history of god", although julia loved the book so much she ended up reading her other books, 'the spiral staircase' and 'through the narrow gate', which are discussed here.

in this interview she was discussing her personal experience going into the extreme shelter of a convent, then the shock of coming out of it into the real world..she's been on both extremes of the religious spectrum and back again and in the end, she became a religious scholar. but it's her experiences, and the clarity of her voice, that's so riveting. i'd like to know what you think...
