From the files of "Psycho Ex-Boyfriends"...
A good friend of mine recently moved back into her Parents' house temporarily when it was discovered her live in boyfriend (who she was "on the outs" with) was using a wireless transmitter to bug her conversations! Holy Perverted Paranoid Privacy Pooper! This information is entirely true...
And it really pisses me off! This basic invasion of privacy is incredibly unacceptable. I am not one who normally nurses thoughts of violence, but this actually is driving fanatasies about broken bones and such. This is one step away from bullying somebody in my book -- trying to control someone subversively.
In other news, some California Legislators are still trying to get driver's licenses for illegal aliens so that they can get auto insurance. What in the HELL makes sense about this? We are approaching the 5th anniversary of 9/11, and the buzzwords since that day has been eternal vigilance. So, let's go ahead and increase border security to include National Guard troops, but should any illegal aliens manage to get through, point them to the nearest DMV for a license and insurance? Yeah, that makes sense!
When this idea was seriously mentioned a couple of years ago (and subsequently "Terminated" by Schwarzennegger), the state of Colorado proclaimed if that law were to pass, they would no longer honor ANY California Driver's Licenses as valid. I applauded that announcement then, and were this latest effort to succeed, I still applaud it.
How about this? Let's "pass" the law and cordially invite the illegals to the DMV, where we promptly round them up and send them home until they can cross legally? Nah... that would be logical.

With a valid driver's license...
...you can buy a bottle of booze.
...you can buy a gun.
...you can buy a plane ticket.
...you can rent a van.
A driver's license is proof that you are a LEGAL RESIDENT of your state. Can it, oxymoronically, also serve as proof that you are NOT a legal resident of your state?
What proof of identity can illegal aliens provide when they apply for a license? Are they all carrying the originals of their birth certificates? If not, how do we know the applicant is the right age? HOW DO WE KNOW THE APPLICANT IS THE RIGHT PERSON?
And will they need to take and pass a written test AND a behind-the-wheel test? How many illegal aliens come to the US with their own cars? How can you take a driving test without a car?
Why do we see these problems with this but our lawmakers --HIRED TO KNOW BETTER-- are blind to them?
This will end badly. For us all.
ok, i agree that issuing a california driver's license is a bad idea.
however, how to deal with the problems? you can debate the rightness or wrongness of this, (and i'm not defending it) but the economies of california and the southern border states depend heavily on the labor of legal- and -illegal immigrants. illegal immigrants do alot of the jobs that most americans won't, they do all the dirty work, broiling themselves in the intense summer valley heat - usually for less than minimum wage, because people can get away with paying them that. as long as there are people willing to engage in long days filled with dirty work for so little pay, the problem won't go away... especially when this kind of life is still better than what they had before they came here.
however, illegal immigrants are here, now, driving down the highways next to us every day. you're not going to round them all up and deport them tomorrow. so how to improve the situation??
the idea of giving them the opportunity to buy insurance sounds good on paper, since it would benefit everyone if more people were driving with insurance.
however, i see at least a couple of problems with the government trying to implement this program...
1) i imagine that anyone who was here illegally would naturally be deeply suspicious of any program that required them to register with the government..so i imagine that compliance for any sort of i.d. card would be minimal. (yes, immigrants take advantage of the healthcare opportunities offered to them by the government, but the way that is handled is different, i think, than applying for a driver's license / identification card.)
2) more and more working-class families can't seem to afford car insurance nowadays...so how can anyone expect that large numbers of illegal immigrants would be rushing out to buy it? how would they afford it?
You have it all wrong Roger. We are supposed to feel bad about the success of our country and do everything we can to make others' lives better for them.
